If I could

If I could, I would lie with you and watch you sleep,
And very gently touch your face
Willing myself not to forget; That I might picture you
with heart -wrenching clarity
long after you have gone.
I would inhale the scent of you. Of your hair,
the texture of your skin, and kiss
that old scar above your eye.
Catching my breath as I trace the shape
of those eyes.
Their colour so deep I could drown.
Hidden now, and perfect, under heavy lashes
flickering slightly as you dream. -
Tell me, - what do you see in me?
My fingers exploring on, over cheekbones
wide and high; And back once more
to that wonderful hair.
On, over the bridge of your nose,
down it's length, over the tip to your lips,
- such erotic lips;
Half parted now, your warm regular breath
caressing my fingertips.
I would bend slowly, and hardly touching
run my tongue along each lip
just entering your mouth to savour
the wetness and the warmth of you.
Then I would stroke your chin -
rough at this hour, in the midst of the night,
tracing the squareness of your jaw,
the small cleft there,
the softness of the flesh underneath.
All of my fingertips now
lightly, slightly massaging.
Losing themselves in the nape of your neck,
in a tangle of hair,
gliding, riding over your collar bones
coming to rest in a hollow.
..And I would bend deeper
and fill it with kisses.
If I could.
